Julian Essam's Bio................
I have been involved with photography in one way or another since developing films for friends at school, and spending one summer holiday with a police photographer. My Father was a policeman, and it was a way of keeping me out of trouble!
My first serious paying involvement was with a firm of aerial photographers based in Kent, with whom I started work as a lowly chemical mixer/wash supervisor, through to becoming one of the aerial photography team. I left this firm to spend 3 years at West Surrey College of Art and Design, to broaden my understanding of the medium and to explore it outside of a professional environment. From here I freelanced for a publisher/stock library working worldwide on mainly publishing projects. I moved to Cornwall in 1987, out of choice, to be with my family who had just embarked on a very brave foray in to the Hotel business. I became interested in setting up landscape photography courses from the hotel and after getting a post at Cornwall College in the Media Centre, became involved in teaching photography, and for many years ran the C&G photography modules at Cornwall College.
In 1994 I returned to the trials and tribulations of freelance photography, returning to education in 2003 joining the staff of Falmouth College of Art, now University College Falmouth. I am now fully involved with my work in the Photography Centre at the new Tremough campus site. I am still actively involved with the medium, pursuing several projects of my own initiation, and working with a colleague on our wedding photography business.
